Ronnie Drew - A Tribute from Barry O'Neill
Hi Folks,

Sad News today, with the death taking place of Ronnie Drew, one of the greatest Irish Folk Musicians ever. Ronnie of course was a great friend of Rory Gallagher’s, after they struck-up a life-long friendship in the mid-1970’s that was to last some 25 years before Rory’s untimely passing. Ronnie carried Rory’s coffin at his funeral in Cork in June 1995.

Ronnie later honoured Rory by performing at the very first Rory Gallagher International Tribute Festival in 2003 and again returned to perform in Ballyshannon at the Rory Gallagher Festival in 2005.

I will always remember having tea with Ronnie at Dorrian’s Hotel in 2005 and he told me of the first time that he and Rory met. He said that he was in Germany on Tour and was in a Hotel in Hamburg when this young guy with long hair approached him and said you are Ronnie Drew and he replied with a laugh to Rory, you are spot on. Ronnie asked Rory was he in Germany working (thinking that this young Irish guy was in construction or Bar work or something) and Rory replied yeah I am playing music myself !!! Ronnie asked what type of music and what do you play like ? Rory replied ’ah some Blues and Rock’, Ronnie asked ’Whats your name ?’

(As Ronnie sat in Dorrian’s in Ballyshannon, lighting his big cigar, at that stage, I felt this huge sense of friendship that he had for Rory.) He continued the story ..............

The young guy with his trademark shirt replied that his name was Rory Gallagher ........... !!! Ronnie said that he could not believe it, that this so unassuming young man was thee Rory Gallagher. Ronnie said that they had the craic that day and drank quite a bit and got pretty merry and it was to be the start of a long friendship.

Ronnie also told me that some years later Rory appeared at one of his performances, I believe he said that it was in Ireland, but can’t be sure. Of course they recorded "Barley and Grape Rag" together that featured on Rory’s Album "Wheel within Wheels".

Thanks for the memories Ronnie, particularly in Ballyshannon, May you rest in Peace,
Barry O’Neill

Rory Lives
We are a new site. Our aim is to promote the music of Ireland's best rock, rhythm and blues artist the one and only legend that is Rory Gallagher. There are many tribute band's to Rory's genius, but we believe that none can compare to the unique brilliance of Chris Stuckey , technically incomparable, and a gentleman to boot.
We hope that you can enjoy , and " TASTE " , and come "TO OUR HOMETOWN " ,and enjoy the brilliance that is "CHRIS STUCKEY " of "SHINKICKER " .who will be on stage at The Mall in Tralee on Sunday night 24th August @ 10.30.p.m.
