Welcome to the Rory Gallagher International Tribute Festival Bebo Page. Hope you are keeping well and are looking forward to the 2008 Tribute to Rory in Ballyshannon. This years Tribute will be a Special 60th Birthday Celebration to Rory in Ballyshannon. Among the headline acts are "JULIAN SAS BAND" & "SINNERBOY.

Rory Gallagher International Tribute Festival in Ballyshannon honours the life and music of Rory and starts on 29th MAY to 1st JUNE 2008. 4,000 people attended in 2007.

Rory Gallagher was born at the Rock Hospital in Ballyshannon on 2nd March 1948 to Parents Daniel and Monica. At that time Rory's Dad was working on the building of the ESB Hydro Station in Ballyshannon. Rory and his family departed Ballyshannon in the 1950's before moving for a period to Derry City, where Rory's brother and life-long Manager Donal was born. The Gallagher's later moved to Cork City.

Rory Gallagher International Tribute Festival & Other Festivals in Ballyshannon
The Rory Gallagher International Tribute Festival takes place in Ballyshannon every year on the last weekend in May (Bank Holiday Weekend).

It celebrates the Music and life of the Pioneer of the Irish Rock ‘n Blues Music movement –
the Late Rory Gallagher who was born here in Ballyshannon at the appropriately named “Rock Hospital”, 60 years ago. (2nd March 1948)

The 2008 Rory Gallagher International Tribute Festival that took place in late May, was a massive success with over 6,000 people attending the popular 4-day event. Many of Rory’s fans travel from all over the world to Ballyshannon, even from as far away as Australia, USA & all across Europe.

Over the last 7 years acts such as “Eric Bell Band” (ex. Thin Lizzy), “Sinnerboy” (Manchester), Ronnie Drew (a lifelong friend of Rory’s), Boo Boo Davis Band (USA) and Rory’s own band members have all performed at the Rory Gallagher International Tribute Festival.

The Festival is now the biggest annual Music Festival in the North West of Irelnad and is without doubt the most unique Music Festival in Ireland. At this years event some 24 bands from 8 different countries entertained the thousands at the Rory Gallagher Festival.

FAMILY

In the Late 1940’s – Ballyshannon was experiencing a boom with the Construction of the Cathleen Falls Hydro Electric Station. Rory’s father - Daniel was here working as a Carpenter on that Scheme and hence Rory was born in Ballyshannon. Rory and his family departed Ballyshannon in the 1950's before moving for a period to Derry City, where Rory's brother and life-long Manager Donal was born. The Gallagher's later moved to Cork City.

HONOURS

Prior to this years Rory Gallagher Festival, the Ballyushannon Town Council honoured Rory’s
contribution to Music and culture with “The Freedom of Ballyshannon” and it was posthumously received on his behalf by his brother – Donal Gallagher. Other commemorations to honour Rory in Ballyshannon include the “Rory Gallagher Theatre” at the Abbey Centre, a Special Plaque at the Rock Hospital where he was born and here where I am standing is “Rory Gallagher Place”
The street where Rory first lived.

In 2009, a full life-sized Bronze Statue of Rory Gallagher will be erected in Ballyshannon Town Centre, something that is very exciting for Rory’s many fans across the world. Rory’s family are equally pleased with the statue being erected here in Ballyshannon.

BALLYSHANNON & FESTIVALS

One of the longest running Folk Festivals takes place annually here, with the Ballyshannon Folk Festival taking place on the August Bank Holiday Weekend, featuring leading acts such as Dervish, Eleanor McAvoy and Four Men and a Dog.

On the Weekend of the 12th of July “Donegal Live – Country Music Festival” takes place in Ballyshannon with “Dominic Kirwan Band” and “the Joe Doaln Tribute Show” leading the Music Fayre with Comedy, Street Entertainment and a major Fireworks display set to illuminate Ireland’s Oldest Town. CAMPING at the Rory Gallagher Festival 2008
OFFICIAL CAMPING 2008 - The Official Campsite will be Fully Serviced with Toilets and 24 Hour Security.
A Shuttle Bus will operate between the Official Campsite and the local GAA Grounds which will be open each day between 8am & 2pm and also between 5pm & 9pm for Shower Facilities.
